Nussbaum Law is a legal practice dedicated exclusively to Family Law in Toronto.

Our legal staff understands that separation and divorce is an emotional time and we are committed to providing a personal approach to all our clients. If it is required, our lawyers and staff have extensive experience in litigating cases in both the Superior Court and Ontario Court of Justice.


JD, MBA, Senior Lawyer

Barry is a respected member of both the Ontario and New York Bars. He completed the combined JD/MBA program at Osgoode Hall and the Schulich School of Business. Prior to practicing law, Barry was an associate at an international consulting firm, where he provided international tax consulting services to Canadian multinational companies. Barry represents clients in all areas of family law, including divorce, support, property division, and domestic contracts (prenuptial, cohabitation, separation, and parenting agreements). Barry also assists clients involved in child protection matters with the Children’s Aid Societies. With his broad and focused experience in family law, Barry provides effective and strategic solutions for his clients. Barry regularly appears in the Ontario and Superior Courts of Justice, including representing clients on appeal matters.

Some of Barry’s notable successes include the following:
  • Successfully defended Ontario as the appropriate jurisdiction, when the mother unilaterally attempted to change the jurisdiction to Alberta (Pearson v. Whittingham, 2012 ONCJ 187).
  • Defeated the Children’s Aid Society on a motion to temporarily place the child in the care of the mother, rather than in the care of the Children’s Aid Society (Children’s Aid Society of Toronto v. C.D., 2015 ONCJ 36).
  • Obtained an Order for sole custody for the Father after a 3-day trial (Alqudsi v. Dahnus, 2016 ONCJ 707).
In his personal time, Barry enjoys spending time with his family, especially his five wonderful children.

Our Team

Liza Bakhshi | B.A. (Hons.), J.D.

Associate Lawyer

Liza Bakhshi's practice encompasses all aspects of family law including divorce, property division, spousal support, child support, parenting, access and child protection issues. Liza frequently represents clients before the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice. Liza's goal is to assist her clients by minimizing disruption and trauma that often accompanies these difficult family law proceedings.
Liza Bakhshi obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Windsor in 2018 and her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminology and Justice from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, graduating on the Dean's List. Liza joined Nussbaum Law Professional Corporation in 2020. Prior to this, Liza worked as a Student-At-Law and an Associate Lawyer at a family law firm in Mississauga.
During law school, Liza worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Windsor and the Ministry of Attorney General Debwewin's Program earning the Access to Justice Reward from the University of Windsor Faculty of Law. In her second year of law school, Liza competed in the Aboriginal Law Moot in Calgary. Liza also volunteered at the Community Legal Aid in Windsor and continues to volunteer for Pro Bono Ontario Free Legal Advice Hotline. Outside of work, Liza enjoys biking, cooking, learning new languages and travelling.

Keeth Raveendran | LLB (HONS.), LLM

Associate Lawyer - Barrister & Solicitor

Prior to joining Nusbaum Family Law, Keeth was an associate at a family law and litigation firm in Alberta. In this position he acted for clients on many family law and civil matters appearing regularly at court.
Keeth employs a logical approach to advocacy and resolving disputes, garnering him the respect of colleagues and opponents while securing favourable results for his clients.
Keeth enjoys spending time with his wife Kajenthy and their daughter. In his free time, Keeth enjoys reading, exercising, cooking and binging sitcoms. He is also fluent in Tamil.
Keeth is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and the Law Society of Ontario.

Afras Khattak, B.A. (Hons.), J.D.

Associate Lawyer – Barrister & Solicitor

Afras Khattak joined Nussbaum Law as a lawyer in December 2020. He previously worked for law firms situated in the Durham Region and then Toronto before joining the Nussbaum Law team.
Afras completed his Bachelor of Arts in Criminology at York University and received his Juris Doctor from Thompson Rivers University, in British Columbia. He is also completing his MBA online through The Business School, Edinburgh Napier University, located in the United Kingdom.
Apart from his educational endeavors, Afras has a strong passion for family law and he consistently keeps up to date on emerging issues regarding the formation of families, the regulation of intact families, and the dissolution of family relationships.
Afras also understands that family matters can be very sensitive. His hands-on and compassionate approach is there to help you stay positive and remain level-headed when faced with these life-changing issues.
In his spare time, Afras enjoys keeping active and playing basketball. He is also a die-hard Toronto Raptors fan.

Ysamin Francoise McGann


Ysamin was called to the Ontario Bar in 2014. She graduated top 3 in her class with magna cum laude from the University of Buckingham, UK. Prior to law school, Ysamin obtained her undergraduate degree with honours in Sociology, Theatre studies and French from York University.

Prior to joining the firm in 2020, Ysamin was practicing with a primary focus Family law and Wills & Estates. She has earned the reputation of being a cooperative and knowledgeable professional. Her core values are based on integrity and honesty as she is direct in her approach while advising clients.

When not in the office, Ysamin enjoys attending the theatre, board games and puzzles. Ysamin also loves travelling, having visited approximately 38 countries and over 120 cities.

Jotty Gill

Associate Lawyer

Jotty Gill earned her LL.B. at Leicester University in the United Kingdom where she specialized in international relations and social justice. Prior to this, she obtained a double major in Political Science and Sociology from McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario. She completed her articles at the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, where she vigorously defended victims of domestic violence in family law and immigration matters. It was during her time at the clinic she realized her passion for family law. Following her call to the bar in 2017, Jotty worked at a downtown Toronto law firm, focusing on family law and wills. Following that, she worked at a Mississauga law firm in the area of civil litigation.
Jotty is a strong advocate for her clients and prides herself on the exceptional service she provides. She will give you a genuine and realistic assessment of your case, and help you understand what to expect throughout the process. Jotty is fluent in Punjabi and Hindi.
When not in the office, Jotty enjoys spending time with her friends and family, watching Netflix and travelling.

Clifton Leung

Associate Lawyer | B.A., J.D.

Clifton Leung graduated from Windsor Law in 2017 after spending his final year at Osgoode Hall Law School. Prior to law school, Clifton graduated with a double major in Philosophy and Criminology & Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Toronto. Clifton realized his passion for family law while working with Jewish Family & Child Service of Greater Toronto. With this experience, he is able to bring the perspective of a children’s aid society to Nussbaum Law, particularly with regard to custody and access.

In his spare time, Clifton enjoys gastronomy and expanding his palate by learning about whiskey and regularly participating in wine tastings.

Jonathan Korman

Associate Lawyer

Jonathan graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2020. Prior to law school, Jonathan obtained an undergraduate degree in Political Science at York University with a focus on international politics and critical security. Jonathan discovered his passion for family law while providing legal assistance to low income clients with the Family Law Project.

Outside of work and school, Jonathan loves rock climbing, the outdoors and his dog Luna.

Ari Rubin

Associate Lawyer

Originally from the UK, Ari graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2020. Prior to Law School, Ari obtained an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Reichman University in Israel as well as a Post Graduate degree in Accounting from York University.

Ari has a passion for Alternative Dispute Resolution, specifically in negotiation and mediation which he has extensive training in. Ari ranked top 5 in the 2020 Dentons Negotiation Cup and subsequently was asked to represent Osgoode internationally.

In his spare time, Ari enjoys travelling, spending time with family and playing soccer (or football as he’d rather call it).

Saloumeh Madani

Associate Lawyer | B.A., M.A., J.D.

Saloumeh (Sally) Madani obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree (B.A.) from McMaster University with a Major in Sociology and Psychology. She went on to obtain her Master of Arts Degree (M.A.) in Sociology from the University of Guelph, where she extensively researched the family unit, specifically the parent-child relationship.

Sally obtained her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Windsor Faculty of Law. Throughout law school, Sally worked as a Caseworker at Community Legal Aid and a Summer Law Student at Legal Assistance of Windsor where she advocated and represented low-income clients before various administrative tribunals. In addition to legal clinic work, Sally acted as a Volunteer Coordinator for Pro Bono Student Canada where she facilitated workshops and trained incoming volunteers to facilitate workshops on issues of consent and the crime of sexual assault.

After law school, Sally articled at a firm in Barrie where she was exposed to a broad range of Family Law matters including complex property and high net-worth files. She is passionate about Family Law and advocates for her clients while providing compassion and guidance along the way.

In her spare time, Sally enjoys traveling, watching documentaries, and spending time with family. Sally is fluent in English and Farsi.

Kaitlyn Zarcone-Beam


Kaitlyn Zarcone-Beam graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2020. Prior to law school Kaitlyn graduated summa cum laude from McMaster University and obtained her undergraduate degree with honours in Linguistics and Italian Studies. 

Kaitlyn has extensive experience advocating for her clients both inside and outside of court. While in law school Kaitlyn immersed herself in the area of family law. She worked in the Family Law Division at Osgoode’s Community and Legal Aid Services Programme (CLASP), where she successfully represented clients at the Ontario Court of Justice. She also worked as the Ontario Family Law Project (FLP) Coordinator at Pro Bono Students Canada. In this position she managed the cross-provincial project, which provided summary, in-court legal drafting services for family law litigants. At FLP Kaitlyn also worked directly with clients to provide on the spot legal drafting including ex parte motions. In addition, Kaitlyn worked at Masellis Family Law Group where she gained further exposure to a variety of complex family law matters. 

After law school, Kaitlyn articled at a boutique insurance defence firm in downtown Toronto. There, she gained extensive litigation experience by successfully arguing on behalf of her clients at the Superior Court of Justice. 

When not in the office, Kaitlyn enjoys cooking, exploring local food in the city, and spending time with her toy poodle, Mango. 

Sarah Boland

Associate Lawyer | B.A. LL.B

Sarah Boland’s work focuses on family law. At the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law at Lakehead University, Sarah conducted primary
original research on law reform. While an intern, she worked in the area of family law. As a member of Toastmasters International, Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music (A.R.C.T, piano), and recipient of the Bronze Cross and National Lifeguard Service
awards from the Lifesaving Society, Sarah brings a wide and varied perspective to her position.

Sarah graduated from Trinity College at the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Arts with Distinction specializing in Political Science. She graduated from the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law at Lakehead University where she conducted primary, original research on law reform.
In addition to being a Millennium Scholar, she was awarded a research scholarship through the University of Toronto to work as part of the Open Net Initiative (ONI) in connection with the Berkman Klein Center.

Nan Zheng

Associate Lawyer | BSc., J.D

Nan Zheng graduated with a Juris Doctorate from Queen’s University in 2014 and was called to the Bar in 2015. Nan has practiced in family law and civil litigation and has appeared before the Superior Court of Justice, and the Ontario Court of Justice with several reported decisions in civil litigation.

Since 2018. Nan has practiced exclusively in family law at a boutique family law firm. Nan has extensive experience with clients in a variety of issues arising from separations and divorces including complex property issues, complex custody and access issues, and child and spousal support issues.

Nan’s interests outside of the law are traveling, nature and reading. She is fluent in English and Mandarin.

Shwetha Pai

Articling Student | B.L.S, LL.B., LLM.

Shwetha received her Bachelor’s in Law from India and practised as an associate lawyer for 3 years in Family Law, Real Estate and Estate Planning. Following that, she graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School with a Masters in Canadian Common Law in 2020.

Prior to joining our firm as an articling student, Shwetha interned at one of the leading family law firms in downtown Toronto. She was the first ever legal intern for whom the firm designed an internship program.

Shwetha likes to utilise her spare time baking and trying her hand at different culinary skills.

Brittany Downing

Law Clerk

Brittany earned her Law Clerk Diploma in 2014 from Centennial College with Honours.
Following graduation, Brittany was employed at a mid-sized litigation firm practicing in the area of Creditor’s Rights. In October 2017, Brittany began working at Nussbaum Law PC to pursue her career in Family Law.
In her spare time, Brittany enjoys spending time with friends and family, watching movies and traveling.

Julia Passeri

Law Clerk

Julia is a final year LL.B student at Queen Mary University of London and current LawClerk/Assistant with Nussbaum Law. During her time in Law School, Julia volunteered at the Legal Advice Centre, and is currently a Mentor in the IAMU Street Community Project. This community project aims at teaching primary school students about Equality and Human Rights issues through in-class interactive weekly lessons.

Prior to attending Law School, Julia obtained her Paralegal degree from Humber’s four-year program. In advance of joining Nussbaum Law, Julia practiced as a licensed Paralegal for an Employment Law firm and has the relative experience in dealing with Meditations, Small Claims Court matters, Ontario Human Rights Tribunal matters and Superior Court of Justice Matters.

Julia will (hopefully) be joining our firm as an Articling Student in 2021. In her spare time, Julia is an avid writer (having been published for Humber’s Paralegal of Access to Justice Journal twice), she also loves to play soccer and travel to various countries.
