LEGAL AID

Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) provides legal assistance to people who cannot afford private counsel. In the family law context, LAO issues “Certificates” to those who qualify. Eligibility is assessed according to your particular legal issue and financial situation.
Once acquired, a Certificate acts as a coupon for free legal services for a certain number of hours. It is then your prerogative to retain a suitable lawyer who accepts Legal Aid Certificates.

What is Covered by the Certificate?

Certificates may cover a broad range of issues, including custody, access, child support, spousal support, property division, and restraining orders. Typically, Certificates are used in the context of litigation, but they may also cover the preparation of separation agreements, and for legal advice before, during, or after mediation.

For more information and to enquire whether you qualify for a Certificate, call LAO toll-free at 1-800-668-8258 or visit their website: https://www.legalaid.on.ca/en/getting/eligibility.asp.

Where can I find a Legal Aid Lawyer?

At Nussbaum Law, we understand that private legal fees are far too burdensome for many litigants. As such, we happily accept Legal Aid Certificates, and we pride ourselves in providing top legal representation to those in need.

What If I Don’t Qualify?

You may also still qualify for other free legal assistance even if you are not eligible for a Certificate.
